Is Traditional Graduation Style a thing of the past?

First things first, I graduated with my MASTERS DEGREE this week! Ayyyee! During the ceremony I noticed there was something different about the way my peers in my graduating class were dressed. I didn’t think anything of it to be honest, but a friend of mine pointed out that this would be the perfect topic to write about.

So let’s get into it! For many of us who have had or attended a graduation at some point in our lives, we usually stick with the go-to style. Pretty dresses and new shoes for the ladies, a nice suit or sharp separates for the guys. Typical stuff. Today’s generation of graduates doesn’t necessarily follow that trend. During my ceremony I noticed the style varied from high end fashion pieces to more casual looks. Here’s why traditional graduation style is a thing of the past:

  1. Self expression is MOST important: We live in a time where many people use their style as a form of self-expression. On the day that we’ve worked the hardest for, it’s only right to be able to express ourselves exactly how we want to.

  2. Comfort is key: Long gone are the days where our parents are telling us what to wear. We all know that graduation ceremonies can be lengthy, so why not wear what we’ll feel most comfortable in.

  3. We’d prefer to show off our accomplishments: This is where our vanity comes in. Today, so many of us work while pursuing higher education and we’d hate to let our coins go to waste. On this day, we’re rocking those Gucci sneakers and Chanel purses. Believe that!

  4. It’s OUR time: The main reason that Traditional Graduation Style is a thing of the past is because we are no longer there. Society is different, expectations have changed, and with so many of us standing up and speaking our truths, it’s only right that on one of the biggest days of our lives we do the exact same.

Although we may have shied away from Traditional Graduation Styles one thing is for certain, we are continuing to break barriers through our pursuits of higher education. We put in the time and dedication to create a better life for ourselves and our loved ones. We deserve to celebrate that exactly how we want to.

I’m proud of us all!!
