Fashion and Hip Hop: Global Influencers
For as long as we can remember, Hip Hop music and culture has influenced and shaped our communities. From groups like Run DMC to NWA, legends like Dapper Dan who brought Gucci to Harlem and artists such as ASAP Rocky (who was the first black person as the face of Dior) and Pharell (muse for the couture house Chanel), have all shaped the way Fashion and Hip Hop relate to one another.
The combining of the two worlds has allowed us to see some of the greatest collaborations to date, ever changing with the latest trends in both genres. So what is it that links the two in a never ending bond? Well here a few reasons:
Expression- both Hip Hop and Fashion have always been avenues for artists to express themselves. The idea has always been to create something meaningful that the world at large can relate to. This is what they both do, effortlessly.
Individuality- the commonality between Fashion and Hip Hop has always been bridged with this one idea; INDIVIDUALITY! The culture has built a community of individuals who relate to one another through their shared interests in music and style.
Community- in my opinion, this is the best part. The community that Hip hop and Fashion continue to build through their collaborative works captivate so many people. It builds a community that spans across the world and that is most admirable.
The Message-the world receives Fashion and Hip Hop as a collaborative effort that not only brings people together but also creates a platform with messages of hope, unity, strength and passion. This message continues to inspire throughout generations.
Hip Hop and Fashion are about more than just music and style. It’s about telling stories, breaking barriers and leaving behind a legacy so inspiring that their history will remain at the core while we continue to create because of it.
